What are the technological benchmarks for wood as a raw material? Which wood species is suitable for my product idea? Are there any historical precedents for this? Which is the strongest of the local wood species?
The book Timber from trees and shrubs provides answers to such questions and summarizes comprehensive scientific work from several years. Modern characterization of thousands of samples provides comparable parameters, in addition to classic properties such as wood density and strength, also parameters of historical relevance, such as abrasion or friction, for a total of 60 Central European wood species. The analysis of 122 historical literature sources dating back to 1690 and 88 ethnological books also shows the utilization and properties of these 60 wood species. Based on wood species determinations in Austrian museums, the specific use of 48 of these wood species in Austria could be proven and presented.
Timber from trees and shrubs combines historical facts with modern descriptions and is intended to arouse curiosity about wood species that are no longer used today. Knowledge about the properties and possible uses of the very valuable wood from our shrubs and small trees creates a desire for new products and ideas for use and can thus make a significant contribution to increasing the sustainability of our forests.
